i've always found that it's best to climb mt si after you've climbed other less strenuous mountains in the weeks prior. it just gives you (mentally) and your body (physically) a better idea of what to expect. for instance i am on my way today to do the climb but in the past couple weeks i started w/ much easier hikes (i.e. rattlesnake ledge, pilchuck..)plus if you do hikes instead of staying in the gym you might realize you may need gear such as a good pair of hiking boots and waterproof (not water resistant, there is a huge difference) clothing...also i suppose it's also a matter of how difficult or how easy you'd like to make it for yourself--for instance i have done this hike completely out of shape last year. it hurts! but doable....i guess you could ask someone at the gym to suggest a simulation on the stair master a 3500 ft rise in 4 mi, preferably in around 2 hrs. ??keep in mind though that the climb downhill is often harder on the knees. also another suggestion...if the goal is not to climb mt si because everyone in seattle has done is (seems like) i'd pick a hike that is more rewarding, visually...something similar is granite mountain. mt si is pretty boring....nothing to see until the very very top and i remember being pelted by hail the last 2 years in the middle of summer. fog=no view. hope this helps!
